The film industry is a very big organization made up of lots of different types of media. These are, Television, film, radio, internet, magazines, newspaper, the games industry, the music industry and many new types of media including self-made films on the internet, e.g. You Tube, also self publishing on blogs.

I am going to explain and describe three different types of media (the three main ones), television, film and music.

The film industry;

The film industry’s main purpose is too make feature films that are made and designed to be shown in the cinema which people pay to go and see. The cinema was first started in the 1890’s but they were black and white and had no sound. It then was made with sound in the early 1930’s but was still in black and white. I the late 1930’s they then invented films in colour and with sound then they then created multiple cinemas in the 1980’s. The cinema is very different to just watching a DVD at home. One thing is the size of the screen has a big difference; the cinema’s screen is 540” wide. There is also lots of new types of surround sound which are speakers which make you feel as if you are in the film. And recently they have made films in 3D, which requires you too wear 3D glasses, it is a special effect, which makes the images in the screen pop out. After the film has been in the cinema it comes out on DVD, then after a while they will broadcast it on box office which you have to pay for, then it will come out on the television and then after a while people will put it on the internet to download. Or sometimes if the film is not as successful as others it will just go straight onto DVD. There are many major film-producing companies such as Sony Pictures, Universal, Warner etc.

The Television industry:

The film industry’s purpose is to make programmes that are made to see on home TV. Television was created in the 1930’s, they was expensive and rare until the late 1960’s and it also was created in colour in the late 1960’s. there was only three channels until the 1980’s and then digital in 2000’s. The television is very unique and easy to use. It is rather cheap and there is a very large variety of channels to watch. You can plug a DVD player into television’s and watch DVD’s on your television. There are a lot of big TV producing companies eg. BBC, ITV, Granada etc.

The Music industry:

The music industry’s main purpose is too design music to be heard wherever. E.g. at home on the radio. Pop music started in the 1700’s with sales of sheet music and popular music hall song. Gramophone records was invented by Thomas Edison in the 1890s. Marconi invented the radio in the 1950s, records became popular in the 1930s. Lp was then invented in the 1950s. CDs were invented in the 1980s and finally digital radio was invented in the 2000s. With a radio you can buy portable ones which you cn take anywhere, even some waterproof ones in the shower! You can plug headphones in certain radios so only you can hear the sound which is coming out of it. You can buy them very cheap and easy to use. Digital brings vast choice, available in more place than television. There are also such things as mp3 players, mp4 players and iPods. An mp3 player is a small object which holds certain songs of your choice. An mp4 player is the same, but is an upgrade, the mp4 player also holds videos! An iPod is the same as a mp4 player but a much better version, it is very popular. You can get songs from nearly anywhere nowadays. You can buy them of a program called iTunes, designed for iPods. Most people download songs illegally now from programs such as Limewire, Frostwire etc. Or just simply from Downloading websites. You can also download videos from websites for mp4 players and iPods from YouTube now. There is many ways you can access and listen to music nowadays E.g. iPods, Mp3+4s, radios, video’s, internet (YouTube etc), TV channels also do radio stations and music channels, stereos and juke boxes. There are many popular music producing companies E.g. TV channels like MTV BBC and more. There are also many popular radio stations such as Capital, Heart, Magic, Smooth and Kiss.
